If your PS4 DualShock 4 controller moves on its own, the camera drifts or the stick does not return correctly to center, the analog module may be worn. I replace analog sticks and test the controller after repair.
Stick Drift in PS4 Controllers
In PS4 DualShock 4 controllers, analog mechanisms wear out through regular gaming. Symptoms include self-movement of characters, camera drift, lack of precision, dead-zone issues, or the stick failing to return to the neutral center position.
Drift often results from wear on analog module components or internal contamination, though other board issues can produce similar symptoms. The scope of repair is determined after evaluating the controller.
What Does the Repair Include?
- disassembly of the controller,
- inspection of the board and analog module condition,
- desoldering the worn analog stick mechanism using a dedicated desoldering tip,
- soldering a brand new analog stick module,
- checking solder pads and board cleaning,
- testing analog stick response and axis movement after repair,
- informing the owner if any additional issues are discovered.
One Analog Stick or Two?
If drift occurs only on one stick, replacing that single module is sufficient. Replacing both modules can be considered if the second stick also shows signs of wear or to save on repeated disassembly.
Replacing two analog sticks in one controller as a package is more cost-effective than opening the controller a second time later on.
Does PS4 Repair Differ from PS5?
The replacement process is similar, but the controller shell design, ribbon cables, and specific analog modules differ between console generations. In both cases, safely desoldering the old module using a dedicated tip profile is critical to protect delicate PCB pads.

When Does Repair Make Economic Sense?
If the analog stick was replaced before or someone attempted a DIY repair, the copper pads on the board might be torn. In these cases, restoring connection traces under a microscope is required.
For older or heavily used controllers (especially with simultaneous shell damage, worn batteries, or broken button ribbons), the total cost of repair and parts should be weighed against the value of a working controller before proceeding. Replacing a single analog stick starts from 100 PLN labour, and replacing both sticks starts from 180 PLN. Replacement parts are priced separately. Damaged PCB pads or failed prior repair attempts may increase the cost.
If the drift is caused by worn analog module components, replacement usually resolves the issue. If the pad has motherboard trace damage, liquid corrosion, or burned pads, additional diagnostics will be required.
If the issue affects only one stick, there is no need to replace both. Replacing both at once is recommended if the other stick is also beginning to show wear, saving on future disassembly.
